The McDonald’s Story

It all started with a small dream and a big heart.

In 1947, Gordy and Harriet McDonald opened the doors to a modest little liquor store tucked away in a corner of North Minneapolis. They knew every neighbor by name, stocked shelves with intention, and believed that quality products and genuine connection would build something lasting.

Back then, there was no website — just a warm smile, a ringing bell on the door, and a hand-written ledger tracking each sale. The McDonald children grew up between aisles of glass bottles and summer afternoons spent sweeping the storefront. Over time, what was once a dual endeavor became a full-family effort.

A move to the Nokomis East Neighborhood in 1974 and a generation later, McDonald’s Neighborhood Liquor Store still stands strong — now with a wider selection, modern shelves, and a loyal customer base. But the heart remains the same: a store built by family, for families.

Whether you’re a long-time local or new to the neighborhood, we’re here with the same welcome McDonalds gave with that first turn of the key.
